Tenebrae - 27 March 2013

Wednesday 27 March 2013 at 7.30pm

"Tenebrae" is Latin for "shadows" or "darkness." This austere yet dramatic liturgy has the choir sing plainsong psalms and lessons with canticles such as the Lamentations of Jeremiah and the Benedictus as the lights and candles in the church are extinguished one by one. This foreshadows the descent into the spiritual and emotional deep winter of Good Friday and the Crucifixion, when the triumph of Palm Sunday and the promise of Maundy Thursday seem meaningless in the face of desertion and bereavement.

And yet, as the Tenebrae rite concludes, we still see the small bright flame of faith lighting the path through the valley of death to the glory of the Resurrection.

A liturgy for contemplation and reflection before the high drama of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
