Today is Great and Holy Friday in the Orthodox church. On Sunday they will celebrate Easter Day.
The Western and Orthodox churches have different dates for Easter because we are working on different calendars - the Western church works on the Gregorian calendar, and the Orthodox church works on the Julian calendar. (It’s best not to delve into the intricacies of why this is so.)
Sometimes, the two Easter celebrations coincide, but this year they have been separated by more than a month. So it is with glad hearts and voices that we can finally cry out with our Orthodox sisters and brothers:
Christ is risen!
He is risen indeed!
