The Anglican Diocese of Ballarat (also known by its archaic spelling, Ballaraat) voted last month to allow the ordination of women as priests.
Bishop Garry Weatherill, lately of the Diocese of Willochra in South Australia, said it was a bittersweet moment for the church.
“Change is always tough. I feel a great weight for the people who are not happy for this to happen,” he said.
Bishop Weatherill praised the conduct of the debate in synod, saying it was done with great sensitivity.
The Diocese of Ballarat is in Victoria, just over the border from the South Australian Diocese of the Murray. You can see all the Anglican Australian dioceses on the map below.
