Heat waves are no fun

In Adelaide we are four days into our five-day heat wave, and it's hard to believe anyone is not longing for the lower temperatures forecast for the weekend.

While we wait, make sure you and your neighbours are keeping out of the heat as much as possible, and taking in lots of water. And please pray for CFS fire fighters and other emergency workers who are out in the heat working for our good.

Extreme heat resources

Extreme heat brochure from SA Health: South Australia can experience long periods of extreme heat so it is important to know what the effects of extreme heat are, who is at risk and how you can prepare for and cope during times of extreme heat.

Summer cooling guide: The Government of South Australia has produced a quick guide to staying cool and comfortable in your home this summer. There are many ways to keep your home cool in summer which can reduce your need for cooling appliances and lower your energy costs.

Sleeping when it’s hot - advice from SA Health: During very hot weather, many people have more difficulty falling asleep, and staying asleep, than at other times of the year. It is important for your health to get the sleep you need, so here are a few ideas to help with sleeping.

A Prayer of Blessing for Emergency Workers

Blessed are you, Lord, God of mercy,
who through your Son gave us a marvelous example of charity
and the great commandment of love for one another.
Send down your blessings on these your servants,
who so generously devote themselves to helping others.
Grant them courage when they are afraid,
wisdom when they must make quick decisions,
strength when they are weary,
and compassion in all their work.
When the alarm sounds,
and they are called to aid both friend and stranger,
let them faithfully serve you in their neighbour.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
